Job Summary:

This position will lead and manage transmission system planning studies, ensuring that PG&E’s electric transmission system operates reliably and efficiently. The role requires extensive experience in transmission planning and analysis, and the incumbent will oversee the development of long-term expansion strategies, interconnection studies, and multi-year assessments. This position also involves collaboration with various internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with NERC and WECC standards and to support the implementation of large-scale transmission projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage transmission planning studies, including long-term system expansion, transmission load forecasts, and development of multi-year assessments.
  • Develop and implement transmission system models for power flow, stability, and reliability analysis, including HVDC and non-standard equipment modeling.
  • Provide technical guidance and support for large-scale transmission projects, including Permit to Construct (PTC) and Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) permits.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC, WECC, and FERC reliability standards through the development of transmission system planning criteria, reports, and regulatory filings.
  • Support the integration of renewable energy resources into the transmission system and provide strategic planning recommendations aligned with PG&E’s Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) goals.
  • Work with internal departments such as Substation, Asset Strategy, and Distribution Planning to ensure the reliability and safety of the transmission network.
  • Prepare and lead presentations for senior management and external stakeholders regarding transmission system planning and capital investment strategies.
  • Oversee the preparation of the Annual Transmission Planning Assessment and Expansion Plan.
  • Lead studies to develop and assess transmission system upgrades, including new generation interconnections and system reliability improvements.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, guiding them in transmission planning and modeling techniques.

Qualifications and Experience:

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
  • At least 8 years of experience in transmission system planning, engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience in the development and execution of transmission system studies, including load forecasting and system expansion planning.
  • Strong understanding of NERC, WECC, FERC, and CAISO transmission standards and regulations.
  • Proficiency in power system modeling and analysis tools (e.g., PSS/E, PSLF, or equivalent).

Desired:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Experience with HVDC systems, renewable energy integration, and system reliability studies.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage complex, multi-phase transmission projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams) and specialized engineering software.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities.

Salary:

  • Minimum: $148,272
  • Maximum: $190,488
